Arizona's share of the Colorado river being cut BIGTIME. WASHINGTON – An ongoing deadlock between the seven states that rely on the Colorado River may have dire consequences for Arizona. A lack of agreement between the Upper and Lower Basin states would mean the federal government imposes its own plan for reallocating the water over the next 10 years – a plan that could mean cuts up to 77% for Arizona. No other state faces such severe cuts under the “no deal” federal proposal. Nevada would see its share of the river reduced by 6%. The other five states would see no change. For obvious reasons, Arizona has been scrambling to find an alternative. Snip snip

Um, no. Arizona has been living within the terms of the Federal water compact imposed several years ago. California, on the other had, has been pretty much ignoring it, and the All American Canal has been sucking way more than its fair share out of the Colorado. Round here, Scottsdale is on the hook for water because of poorly planned development and way too many golf courses--despite being irrigated by treated effluent. Supposedly, all development has to be linked to a 100 year water supply (for example, where I live in Maricopa County, we are linked to the water rights of Planet Ranch). Water law is pretty interesting and a lot of attorneys here make a nice living wrangling out these water contracts. fwiw, agriculture is still the largest consumer of water by far. ______________________________ Don't pet the fluffy murder cow.
