A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan on April 20, 2026, at 16:53 JST (07:53 UTC), triggering a tsunami warning and prompting widespread evacuations. The epicenter was located off Iwate Prefecture near the Sanriku Coast, an area historically vulnerable to major seismic events. Tsunami warnings and advisories were issued for coastal areas of Iwate, Aomori, and Hokkaido prefectures, with initial forecasts predicting waves up to 3 meters (9.8 feet). Actual tsunami waves reached 80 cm (2.6 feet) in Kuji Port, Iwate, with smaller waves observed in Miyako, Sendai, and parts of Hokkaido. The warnings were later downgraded to advisories as the immediate threat diminished. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) initially reported the quake as magnitude 7.5, later revising it to 7.7, while the USGS recorded it as 7.4. No major casualties or damage have been reported so far, though 171,957 people were under evacuation orders and 200 power outages occurred. Authorities issued a rare "subsequent earthquake advisory", warning of a slightly increased risk of a larger "mega-quake" in the coming days, particularly along the northern Japanese coast. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi urged immediate evacuations, and emergency measures were activated, including suspensions of Shinkansen and local rail services. Nuclear facilities, including Fukushima Daiichi, Fukushima Daini, and Onagawa, reported no abnormalities, with workers evacuated as a precaution. >>> "LIVE!
