Despite the name, the "live ebola" vaccine does not actually contain ebola virus. It is actually a weakened vesicular stomatitis virus that has had one gene replaced so that it produces an outer shell that looks similar to ebola and causes the body to produce antibodies that are cross reactive with the actual ebola virus. So, you can't get ebola from the vaccine and if it can be transmitted by shedding (no evidence of this so far), then you would be at risk of getting VSV, not ebola. Of course, the nice thing about ebola is that, if you stay out of spitting distance, you won't get it. That's why they only give it to the people most at risk of coming into contact with ebola - lab and health care workers. | |||

I assess trust differently for different sources. I have very limited trust for the CDC, but I have always been distrustful of government. I trust that government will always cut corners, deflect responsibility, exercise power for the sake of power, and so on. That is just human nature at scale. I trust science where it is traditionally trustworthy and doubt it where it is not. We don't have a lot of problems with research reporting accurately how a vaccine was produced. The science that underlies the engineering is well understood and the engineering is done commercially. Nobody lied about what the various Covid vaccines were - just how well they worked and what some of the side effects were. And the biggest part of the problem there was the pace of development. Nobody could get the answers that we needed in the time allotted and all of the people involved were playing a game of musical chairs in which none of them wanted to be the one to have to admit their faults while the rest piled on. You can do science better or faster, but not both. I have no reason to doubt that the Ebola vaccine is exactly what has been reported and there are a lot of conclusions that can reasonably be made from that information. As with Covid, what we can't easily know is how effective it is and what the side effects might be. And since there is virtually no possibility that I will come into contact with ebola, I have no plans to sign up to be a guinea pig. If I worked in a lab that had ebola exposure, I'd sure as hell take it though and be glad to have it. Ebola is a rough way to check out. | |||
