We have a tsunami coming in at 11:50 tonight. Please pray that the idiots in charge of the sirens will not disturb our sleep for a 16 inch wave. (But it is tourist season, so they probably will.) | ||

Grab a board, surf's up, dude. I had to fix my weather radio to not alert me of every black cloud that produced thunder, flash flood, watches, warnings, etc. Tornado. That's the only one I need. I know it's out of an abundance of caution, but I also look at how sirens mysteriously never seem to go off when danger is imminent. I was at a trial with the dog a few months ago and I heard an air raid siren go off. I had that horn in my back yard in Phoenix way back when and that is exactly what this sounded like. No one paid any attention to it until I yelled, "Hey, is that the air raid siren?" Suddenly, a few women took notice of it and said "No, that's the storm warning siren. I wonder why it's going off?" Will keep your safety in my prayers. | |||

Thanks! In all seriousness, if you are going to pray, do it for the people of Kamchatka and Japan, and maybe Hawaii. CONUS will be a non-event. (Except for my eardrums.) | |||

Well, in the end, they closed the beaches but they didn't run the sirens. It was nice walking the dogs on the beach this morning - nobody in sight. | |||

The sixth biggest earthquake in recorded history, and the earth is still ringing like a bell per GeologyHub (recommend his feed on Youtube). Even he isn't sure why the tsunami was sixty percent less than predicted. Thank God for geological fuckups, I guess. I used to take care of a lady who lived in Hilo during the 1946 tsunami. She lost a lot of friends in that disaster and had to swim for her life. ______________________________ Don't pet the fluffy murder cow. | |||

After Japan, they spent several years revising all their models for greater water volumes. One reason that I know that is that I live where all the evacuation signs used to point and now they have been removed. I went from being in a safe zone to an inundation zone. The problem is that we don't really have a lot of tsunami data and it is likely that most models are now using "better safe than sorry," levels, so that predictions are more likely to overestimate. There were places in Japan where the wave heights were much greater than expected, but there were also places where they were right on the money or even lower. All in all, it is a lot better to expect to get wiped out by a tsunami than to think that you're safe. But the predictions in many places are now likely to be 1.5 to 2.5 times higher than reality. | |||

Looks like a pretty narrow bay. That's where things can get crazy. It's too bad that there is nothing to give a sense of scale. Those cliffs could be 60 feet or 200 feet. | |||
