Lifted from another thread, but this has been a question for me. I am debating getting a CB (had one in high school, now long gone) for short range communications. Yes, I have a couple of handheld frs radios but wondering about something with a little more reach. Also thinking about car unit vs. handheld. I've looked into getting a ham license, but the time involved and just the general bullshit with .gov makes it look like a waste. Also contemplating a Starlink, given how well the system performed for people during Helene. ______________________________ Don't pet the fluffy murder cow.

I pass on the ham as well. I've had CB since 1972 (licensed back then). Our primary reason for keeping an active station is wildfire, plus friends and local events/emergencies, etc. You can spend from a couple hundred bucks to a few thousand depending on the range you want. The quickest and least expensive route would be an in-vehicle w/a 100-200 watt linear for local comm. (linear = signal booster) Linears are supposedly forbidden for CB but the FCC gave oversight to local authorities unless severe infractions are involved. If you're not familiar with the multitude of possibilities and costs or equipment the best thing to do is talk to people who are.. friends/CB shop techies/etc. Too bad we lost Lib, he was very experienced and knowledgeable re: radio comms. Still miss the guy, he was a pretty awesome person. >>> "LIVE! Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death. LIVE! LIVE! LIVE!" Auntie Mame >>> I never asked for trust funds. Why can't you get a ham setup to listen and not broadcast? You wouldn't be stepping on any .gov toes **************** Does anything rhyme with orange?

That's what I'm doing. Just don't touch the TX button and no one knows the wiser. And if it's SHTF, they'll be no gov to worry about you broadcasting. .=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=. Repeal the 19th.
