"What is meant by the term "power elite"?
The power elite is a small group of individuals at the head of the biggest corporations, the executive branch of the government, and the military. According to Mills, this group is increasingly made of the same people who cycle through the three sectors in the course of a career. The idea of the "political outsider" helps legitimize movement from the private and military sectors into the executive branch of the government.

What was C. Wright Mills' theory?
C. Wright Mills' theory is that a small group of power elite control society. They tend to share a similar class and educational background, and over time, as they work in the bureaucratic institutions that control all of society, they adopt the same worldview. They do not all have the same ideology, but they are increasingly united in militarism, capitalism, and authoritarianism. They control society through the mass media.

Who are the power elite according to Mills?
According to Mills the power elite are the people in society who make all the decisions that matter. They head the military, the largest corporations, and the government. The decisions of other elites, such as run-of-the-mill rich people and celebrities, don't really matter. Only the decisions of the few hundred people at the very top matter."

Many of the tenets of the Empire share similar traits of the early Romans. We all know deep in our collective psyches that our Empire will share the same faite as the Romans: our decline is well on its way.
