Those being shot are make the mistake of fleeing back into their own lines (summarily being executed), instead of surrendering to the Russians. These numbers are vastly underreported because the revelations of those throwing down their arms is highly embarrassing for the Ukrainian government. FYI--whole platoons, squads and companies are now surrendering to the Russians as this alleged counter-offensive has just become a massive, pointless slaughter for Ukraine.
The Ukrainian "mountain of steel" has literally been ground down into an ant-hill of scrap-metal and rubble by Russian precision fire capabilities.
