A leading geneticist claims he's serious in his claim that humans are descended from chimps and pigs.

Dr Eugene McCarthy, a world authority on hybridization at the University of Georgia, says the theory would explain many of the characteristics that make humans unique from other primates.

Humans and chimpanzees are closely related and it is a long held belief among scientists that the two share a common ancestor.

However, Dr McCarthy says that there are important differences between the two species and that many of the divergent characteristics possessed by humans are also shared by pigs.

He says these include hairless skin, a thick layer of subcutaneous fat, light-coloured eyes, protruding noses and heavy eyelashes. He points out similarities in internal organs which mean that pig heart valves can be used in human transplant operations.

This guy is one of those interesting cranks who has occasionally turned out some interesting work, but is mostly Coast to Coast AM material. Humans, pigs, and chimps all have fully sequenced genomes and it would be really easy to tell if we had gone through a hybridization event, even an ancient one.

A chimp/pig hybrid was recently born in Mississippi. When asked to name the sex of the newborn, the father said, I don't know!

I don't know about the mixed genomes there but I lost my appetite for pork when they gave pigs to a tribe of cannibals.They love pork because it tastes like people..So there may be some truth to this thread.

Plus pig feces smells similar to human excrement
