Well . . . kind of. Humans do tend to take the easier path and are lazy as fuck.
It's called metasthesis, or basically switching syllables to make things easier to pronounce. "Ask" is kind of a variant of this, as the sibilant "S" is difficult for some facial structures to accommodate (insert racist comment here). Now, this was the concept in 1981 and who knows what the theory is now.
I tend to lean towards educational level (regions don't matter; most Southerners are articulate with a delightful accent). However, even Jimmy Carter (a for real nucular submariner) was heard to use that pronunciation.
Black English can at times be almost incomprehensible to me but it is interesting to watch my patients move in and out of that dialect into standard American English.

Soooo.... basically, predominantly minority public schools don't have daily word enunciation lessons in primary school? The 3 black kids in my elementary school were as articulate as us, and so were their parents.

Yeah, you went to school with 3 of them. Out of how many in your school? When they become the majority they revert to jungle behavior (like their own fucked up sort of speech) as a show of defiance against whitey. Just the same way they act at public events. When they're in the minority they're usually decently behaved. When they're the majority is when all hell breaks loose.
I've seen too much of it with blacks that I went to school with who did just as well in English class as anyone else, but now 30-40 years on (I'm 56) I see them on Facebook with the typical n****rish refusal to use possessive case...."I just came from my sister house"...., etc. even among a few of those who made straight A's or damn near it, and went on to get college degrees.
