First 10 Barter Items to Stockpile When Society Is Collapsing
According to Madge Waggy: When society collapses, bartering is what’ll keep you and your family alive—it will be as important to your SHTF plan as building a prepper pantry, fortifying your home against threats, and securing a bug out location.

There’s little doubt that, once the dust settles, the post-collapse life is going to be tough. Most of the conveniences we take for granted today will be hard to acquire, regardless of whether or not money will still be worth anything. People who want them will say and do anything, people who sell them will come up with all sorts of strategies and you need to be prepared because, no matter how prepped you are, it’s still likely you’ll end up in desperate positions. That is why it is important to know how to barter.

how to barter
Without currency to set value, how will you get the things you need? Image via epSos .de on flickr.
In what follows I want to give you a few solid bartering and negotiation tactics and techniques that will help you get food, water or medicine when you’ll need them most. However, if you truly want them to work for you, you have to practice them. Reading them just isn’t enough, that’s why included a special section at the end where I suggest how you can do that.

Top 10 Barter Items To Stockpile
Item Why It’s Great For Bartering
1. Bandages First aid items are very valuable, especially care for larger wounds since they will require more dressing and frequent changes.
2. Batteries AA and AAA are popular sizes for flashlights, headlamps, radios, and numerous other electronics. Batteries inevitably run out so these are a surefire need after SHTF.
3. MREs Food. Need we say more? Keep in mind that someone desparate for food is very vulnerable and use caution when negotiating a deal.
4. Duct Tape Infinite survival uses, including splinting a broken bone, repairing a tent, fletching an arrow, and marking a trail. An entire roll of duct tape should yield a high value in a trade.
5. Zip Ties Versatile and strong, zip ties are great for hanging gear, securing shelter, fixing clothes and shoes, and more. It’s easy to carry a large number of them and separate into smaller bundles to trade.
6. Fish Antibiotics Fish antibiotics can be purchased OTC and contain the same ingredients as human antibiotics. For more information on types and dosages, check out Fish Antibiotics For Humans: A Safe Option For Your Survival Kit?
7. Condoms In addition to contraception, condoms have many survival uses such as carrying water (up to 2 gallons!), waterproofing gear, even a slingshot for hunting small game. They are also lightweight and easy to carry.
8. Water Purification Tablets Since each tablet treats 16 oz of water, one bottle contains many bartering opportunities. Or trade the whole bottle for a larger item you need.
9. Waterproof Matches Fire is essential to survival so waterproof matches can be a great bartering tool. You can also carry extra capsule lighters, such as the Everstryke Pro to add long-term value to your trade.
10. Button Compasses Small and inexpensive yet very useful, especially in the absence of GPS or cell phone navigation. They can be used to find the way back to camp, locate family and friends, or to migrate to a new area.

How To Barter After Disaster
how to barter
Trade wisely to conserve your resources and obtain the things you need.
Forget About Meeting The Other Person In The Middle
For some reason, many negotiations end before they begin. One of the parties gives a number, the other gives another and they both know they’ll agree to the sum of their offers divided by 2.

how to barter
Don’t settle for less than your fair share.
You can do better than that. The reason this happens is because they’re not taking into consideration other factors such as how bad one party needs what the other has to offer. Another thing you can do is find out as much as you can about your opponent beforehand.

The more you know about them and their situation, the more leverage you’ll have. And if you can’t find out much about them, it’s best to avoid doing any kind of post-SHTF deals. Those could be dangerous, anyway.

Start With A Lowball Offer
If you can do this and your opponent doesn’t turn around and leave, you just saved yourself a lot of money (or whatever you are using for currency). Starting really low means that the other party will eventually have to settle for a much lower price than if you’d started with something more reasonable.

Don’t Be Afraid To Walk Away From A Deal
Everything is a number’s game. Just because you need what the other person has to offer, this doesn’t mean you have to take it. You might find 5 or 10 other guys out there that will gladly take your deal and give you what you need, you just need to have the guts to end the negotiations and look for them.

And if you do barter during SHTF--best to have an AK slung on a 2-pointer around your neck to back up the seriousness of the situation. Don't go into any situation un-strapped.

In a post-apocalyptic scenario, how long do you think that you would last?

In any survival situation, there are four big areas that always must be addressed: food, water, power and shelter.

Of course many would add security to that list.

Pretty good list.

Maybe too specific??? The basic conditions & climate of your area really dictate what are the essentials. Pretty much, if you still need some essentials once SHTF; you waited too long.

Basic needs are: Warm & Dry, Hydrated & Fed, and Defense.

Knowledge of Camping gives you a big leg-up for survival and comfort. Gotta have several ways of cooking and foods on hand that enable decent nutrition and vitamins. Water filtration devices that are serviceable and long-lasting are a critical means to preserve health. If you got a good wood supply and woodstove, can get by with boiling raw water. A pkg of pool shock (hypochrlorite bleach crystals) will last for years and not lose effectiveness after a couple months like laundry bleach will. Candle filters with reservoir are great for in home use. Ours has been in use for 22yrs and shows minimal wear on the ceramic filters, yet we have spares...

Cooking fuel is really a big one. The propane adapter to fill small bottles from a 5gal tank costs about $10, worth have. Adapter hoses to enable use of 5gal tanks are good to have. Buy the quality propane bottles like Coleman to refill to be sure of good quality for refilling.

Safe hygeine is another critical health concern.

Store your own bulk grains in 5 gal buckets using CO2 bricks. Get your grains together with bleach cleaned bukets & gasket lids, wrap CO2 brick in a towel and hammer into .25 cent size chips. Layer 10 chips every 25% of bucket with last layer on top. Place lid on loosely for 30-45mins till fully gassified. Carbon Dioxide sinks to permeate the grain & drives O2 out. Once gassified, hammer lid down and label.

Most "preppers" are only consumers; never learning how to use their gear. Try living for a weekend without using your electric. You will learn a lot about your needs in a short term situation.

Not really on the topic of "first items to disappear" but call this an "Important but overlooked" items....

5 gallon paint buckets are extremely valuable to have. Used ones for garden and other outside stuff, New ones can be used for food storage and keeping stuff dry and easy to move carry. Smaller ones are good to pack ammunition in.

Really need a good assortment of funnels Large width, long drop tubes, food quality so can fill sm containers from bulk. Along with these, All sorts of measuring cups and variety of plastic cups etc.

Got Gasoline and fuel oil containers? New fuel cans go for about $25 for the plastic 5gal jobs, $75 for steel Jerry cans.

Got matches, Bic lighters, Pen & Paper supplies, Printer Ink?

Am very pleased with the Vectron Power Inversters have recently bought. 375w 12v & 800w 24v. Great to have and can recharge with your auto alternator or a solar panel or genertor.

Got a decent digital voltmeter? Bought Fluke 30yrs ago, but Amzn has a Klein deal for $50 w/several meters and a nice voltmeter. For about $12 you can get a very similar chinese non-brandname.

Got automotive and carpentry tools? Outdoor saws, Utility knives, bushcraft knives like cheap Morakniv?
Got ammo for your guns?
Spare batteries for portable power tools?
Portable saw with arbor trim blades work great around the yard.

Best places for so many things are thrift shops and pawnshops. Always offer 40% less on pawn items and tell you'll pay cash. Always get a deal that way.

Just a note from personal experience.....

If you keep Bic lighters (or any other brand I suppose), check them every so often to make sure they're still good.

I bought a 4 pack one time and tossed them in the kitchen junk drawer "for a rainy day". Several years later while looking for something in that drawer I took them out and decided to try them.

Two of them when struck let out a big puff of dust and then wouldn't spark anymore. I guess the flints had just deteriorated over time and disintegrated.

One of them struck well, but never would light, even trying to take a jump start from a good lighter I had in my pocket. I guess all the gas had leaked out of that one.

Out of the original 4, only one was still good at that point, which I'm thinking was about 4-5 years after I had bought them.

Thumbs Up

Bics are great, but I keep several big boxes of matches in those metal Danish cookie cans. They last forever out here.

Disposable lighters are built to fail. Cheap and convenient, but not a prep item. Put away a couple refillable butane lighters, spare flints and some fuel cans.

I love my cookie tin of vintage matches. The old ones are sturdy built with plenty of spark. New wooden matches I recently bought are so thin they snap when striking.

When it comes to bartering my thoughts go to what will I need after SHTF? Then I prep that area. I figure people looking to barter post SHTF will be price gougers, beggars, and bandits.

I already trade with a handful of people I've known for years. I'm not looking to expand beyond my circle.

I have boxes to hand out to those passing through. Each box has small bottles of Natri-Chlor, tube of horse paste, silver gel, packets of Wonder Dust, tiny superglue, a gut-busting survival bar and a couple of fuel tabs.

Those whose plans are "go live in the woods" will find the woods will eat them alive.

Of note.....

Those little cans of butane fuel are apt to leak down over the course of years, just maybe not QUITE as likely as lighters themselves.

Matches are always a good thing to have, as you mentioned. I keep multiple fire starters on hand - butane lighters, strike-anywhere matches, and Zippo lighters with fuel and flints.

Smile

Zippos are by far the best, look at all the MacIver stuff you can do with them. Downside of Zippo is I can smell their use 1/2 mile away. They are not stealth.

The US Nuclear Target Map shows important places in the US that could be targets in a nuclear attack. This map, which clearly displays these key locations, has been popular online since news outlets like CBS first shared it in 2015. Military strategists and analysts create these maps using different intelligence sources to decide which locations are most important strategically.

Key Takeaways:

A US Nuclear Target Map highlights possible targets and safe areas, aiding emergency planning by showing where attacks may occur and locations less likely to be directly affected.
The world’s nuclear weapons, mainly held by the United States and Russia, present significant dangers. The Korean Peninsula, South Asia, and the Middle East are especially unstable.
Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho, and Maine are seen as safe zones.
Government agencies like the CDC and FEMA prepare for nuclear events by promoting readiness, raising public awareness, and offering guidelines on protection and evacuation.
In this article, you’ll understand the importance of the US Nuclear Target Map. It aims to help you understand the potential effects of nuclear conflict, strategic planning, and its implications on global security.

Nuclear Threat Awareness
newspaper with bold text announcing a nuclear attack
Understanding nuclear threats is vital for everyone, not just leaders and experts. It helps you see how serious nuclear weapons are and their effect on world safety and your own.

First, it shows why countries avoid using these powerful weapons, leading to talks about reducing arms and maintaining peace. Second, this knowledge lets you participate in meaningful discussions and decisions about your country’s defense and its role in the world.

Also, when informed, you can better understand the news and the hidden risks of global tensions. Knowing about nuclear strategies helps you form opinions on what actions your country and others should take on the international stage.

Latest Global Nuclear Arsenal Statistics And Potential Geopolitical Tensions
The latest statistics on global nuclear arsenals show a complex and evolving landscape, with significant expansion and modernization efforts underway by several key states. Here’s a summary of the current state of nuclear forces:

United States and Russia: These countries hold the largest shares of the world’s nuclear arsenal, collectively accounting for over 90% of the world’s nuclear weapons. Both are actively modernizing their nuclear forces, including warheads, missile systems, and aircraft delivery systems.
China: China is undergoing one of the most rapid expansions of nuclear capabilities among the nine nuclear-armed states. Recent estimates suggest that China’s stockpile includes around 500 nuclear warheads, with significant developments in missile capabilities and delivery systems.
United Kingdom: In a shift from previous disarmament policies, the UK plans to increase its nuclear warhead ceiling, reflecting a broader trend of reevaluating nuclear strategies.
Other Nuclear States: Countries like India, Pakistan, and North Korea are also enhancing their nuclear capabilities. North Korea, for instance, continues to prioritize and expand its nuclear program as a core element of its national security strategy.
Several nations are modernizing and expanding nuclear arsenals, reflecting ongoing updates in global military capabilities. These developments emphasize the dynamic nature of nuclear forces worldwide.
