I know, thanks. Stay safe and sane, for everyone's sake.

Maybe it's just a nasty cough and will get better in a bit...we can dream.

Maybe he'll just drink himself to death or get killed in a car accident or have a heart attack when he's yelling at someone or die from excitement with a willy up his butt or have a stroke or get murdered, himself, by some ex-con out for revenge.

it's definitely something you have to think hard and long about before doing anything, either just caring for him or assisting.

After all is said and done, you're the one that has to deal with it in both cases, nurse or assistant.

I'm sure you'll do what's right for you.

So...is this another 'ex' who you hope will die before messing with ya anymore?

What happens if you just walk away if he 'needs' you cuz he is sick?

Slow down - wait & see what they find first.

However while that's going on - think & HARD. What time/energy/resources are you willing to committ to this man & the effort that may be involved here. You mentioned only one of his children still speaks to him - why? That may become important.

Secondly - if you DO become invlved in any end of life care - best to see a lawyer - both of you - & make sure your ass is covered. Last thing you want is greedy adult kids descending on you accusing you of stealing money or itmes from his hom: "While papa was so ill" & other problems of that sort.

THINK!

It's not just you to be considered but the effect on your children.

FWIW, I took DH off life support--removed the trach circuit and IVs. Nobody said a word to me, since he was clearly dying.

I knew it was time. And I wouldn't hesitate to do it again if need be. And if this happens to you, I promise you will know when it is time and what to do.

Take GOG to a nice romantic trip to Paris. Take him to the top of the Eiffle Tower. Look over the edge romatically and push his ass over.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww splat.

Problem solved!

Aw...you guys make me laugh! Thanks.

I'll be damned if I know how this is going to play out. Or what my role will be in it.

He's pretty stressed out at the moment and isn't sleeping well...can't say I blame him. He's bossing people around as if he were some kind of top brass army officer...that's so 'him' and as I'm not 'with' him any longer, I can find it kinda sweet. I guess he is freaking out inside and hasn't yet even begun to come to terms with it all (if it's not cancer this time, it will be the next, I'm fairly certain)...and so he is doing the 'I rule me and it's me that decides and I am NOT ill!'.

What are those seven stages of acceptance, again?

I told him way before this to get his life in order just in case. The business side, the family side, the personal side, and all the other sides, too. I suggested a sealed envelope for me, to be opened in the worse case scenario, just in case of emergency or problem...keys to all home, car, and business. A list of family and friend contacts. An inventory of his stuff and who gets what. A letter for his daughter. A sort of testament so we know what to do with his remains. A letter done by a Notary giving me first rights to buy his business (at a cut price to avoid the inheritance going to those he doesn't want to inherit, and with the promise to pay the rest to his daughter in installments).

I also told him to go up to Paris and see his lawyer girlfriend and work it all out before it's needed...and this was way before he started to cough.

Not to mention the personal side. I'm big on, 'Be happy, love life, and tell the people who you care for that you love them. Don't go out with regrets if you can help it.'. I've been saying that for a while to him, too. He knows, but what he does with it is his business.

In the next few days we will have to have a conversation about what to do about his daughter, who is preparing to leave and go to boarding school this autumn. Her mom and dad are at war, but if he's gonna get really sick, then perhaps she should go and live or go to school nearer to where the mom lives. He's gonna hate me for bringing that one up, I know.

Thanks, CS. My kids are already affected. My daughter commented on how difficult it would be for his daughter to lose her dad at this age, and the son who works with GOG is at the denial stage. His daughter hasn't been told anything so far, and probably won't be told by her dad even if it's really serious. He'll hold out against her going to her mom til the bitter end...if only to 'get even' with the mom (don't ask me, I try to stay out of the details of that one).

Me, I'm just reflective and a bit sad. I'd prefer missing him as an ex rather than missing him cause he's dead.

No, Sandy, that would be just the ex-husband. Who is still at it, some almost 20 years on.

Walk away? Can't. Won't. There are my kids and his to consider showing a good example to, for one thing. And, as a human who still has some shreds of sentiment and value for a friend, why would I even think of walking away?

Caring ought to be easier than assisting. Or maybe not.

You mean just like you describe GOG doing with his ex?

Good to know he is not as bad to YOU. And if you can't walk away, then it's not something you can do....I just wondered.

How old is the daughter?

She was very young and he was old even then. His daughter and I once spoke about what happened and I told her that I perfectly understood her mom's reaction...it's only because I'm older and wiser that I haven't gone batshit.
